What is kinesiology tape?
Kinesiotape is a highly elastic tape made of cotton and a small proportion of nylon fibers with an adhesive layer of acrylic adhesive.
Kinesio tapes are breathable, water-permeable and have adhesive properties without restricting freedom of movement. The most important thing, however, is that you are free of medications and other active ingredients.
The tape is very similar in its stretch capabilities to the thickness and weight of human skin and can be used with certain application techniqueshave a positive impact on improving muscle and joint function. At the same time, kinesiological tape can support the lymphatic system.
Kinesio tape was developed by the Japanese chiropractor Kenzo Kase in the 1970s from kinesiological movement theory. He was looking for ways to relieve pain without the influence of medication. The treatment method came to Europe and America in the mid-1990s and is now present in almost every country.
Where is kinesio tape used?
Kinesiotape can be used for a wide variety of ailments and injuries. The most common areas of application are:
- Muscle complaints (overload, strain, torn muscle fiber, imbalances)
- Tendon problems (Achilles tendon, tennis and golfer's elbow, runner's knee)
- Joint problems (after ligament injuries, instability, arthrosis, swelling)
- Shoulder problems (impingement syndrome, instabilities)
- Back pain (lumbago, cervical spine syndrome, sciatica)
- bad posture
- Headaches, migraines, neurological disorders
- Lymphatic drainage disorders
It offers support and stability without affecting mobility and can stimulate the body's own healing processes. Therefore, kinesiological tape is often used as a supplementary treatment method or as a so-called quick fix.
How does kinesiology tape work?
A good kinesiotape should have the same thickness and elasticity as the skin. Because the kinesio tape is fixed to the skin, the underlying tissue is displaced when it moves. The stimulus of moving should activate various receptors (for touch, pain, temperature and spatial position), which are responsible for muscle tension. The aim is to transmit signals to the central nervous system with positive effects on the body.
In addition, kinesiotape should also reduce pain and improve blood flow, as well as relieve damaged muscles, ligaments and joints.
The aim of every treatment with Kinesiotape is to activate and support the body's self-healing powers.
IMPORTANT NOTE: So far, none of the above mechanisms of action have been proven in studies. The specific effectiveness is therefore not clearly proven. Kinesiological taping cannot replace conventional medical treatment, it can only supplement it!

Kinesiotape: Tips for the right taping
Here you will find the most important tips for installing Kinesio tape:
Make sure the skin is clean, oil-free and dry before applying the Kinesio tape
Round off the corners of the Kinesio tape with scissors. This means it lasts significantly longer on the skin.
Always apply the anchor point of the Kinesio tape without pulling.
When applying the tape, avoid wrinkles, otherwise blisters may form on the skin
Make sure that the skin under the kinesio tape does not form wrinkles when applying it.
After applying the Kinesio tape, rub the backing paper over the tape. The heat generated activates the adhesive and ensures better adhesion
Ideally, the area treated with the Kinesio tape should be hair-free. This extends the possible wearing time.
Always carefully remove the Kinesio tape from the skin. The following tips can help you remove the tape painlessly: Use oil to loosen the tape, remove the tape when it is wet (e.g. in the shower), unroll the tape.
